"IN THE MOOD" ALBUM COVER

Client:

Bodyshop Dolls

Tools:

Adobe Illustrator, OneNote

I was requested by the Bodyshop Dolls' sound producer to create an 'old jazz with a modern look' vector illustration for their album cover. They wanted to include a vintage radio to reflect the music group's genre of jazz and lipstick to represent the femininity of the singers.

PROCESS

I began the creative process by listening to electro-swing and creating an inspiration board by searching for images and organizing them in OneNote. I searched for the following:

- Vintage Lipstick Poster

- Saul Bass

- Vintage Radio

For the first cover idea, I was inspired by the cut-and-paste appearance of Saul Bass's work. Rather than cutting out and combining pieces of paper, I used the pen tool to create and combine shapes to form the vintage radio containing the performers. The lipstick was placed to the bottom right to balance the composition.

The second cover idea was inspired by the minimalist designs by vintage lipstick and fashion advertisements.

The third cover idea was an experiment inspired by the potential activities of a feminine jazz singer. In this case, posing for the camera, putting on lipstick, and singing. Three activities are shown to reflect the trio of singers in the Beautyshop Dolls.

I wanted to confirm whether the art direction was what the client wanted so I showed cover ideas 1-3 to the sound producer for early feedback. He confirmed that that I was on the right track and requested that I combine all the ideas together.

After I revealed cover ideas 4 and 5, he was very satisfied with cover 5 where my vision of the activities of a jazz singer is encapsulated in a vintage radio.
