I was taking the SkyTrain in Vancouver and saw someone with interesting and colorful graffiti-patterned shoes. It inspired me to do a personal project where I have to create a shoe advertisement that uses bold colors and has a "street" feel to it.

PROCESS

First, I grabbed a creative commons street image with a nice brick texture. The image itself was square and did not fit the dimensions of the poster ad so I used content-aware fill to repeat the brick texture and maintain the size of the bricks and person.

Although the advertisement itself used bold colors, I wanted to keep the person's original colors to contrast and balance the piece. In this case, I zoomed in to the person and used the pen tool to render out the individual.

Afterwards, I colorized the wall to yellow to create a settle contrast to the individual's purple color palette.

I grabbed a creative commons picture of a running shoe and added filters to it to make it look like an ink stamp. I changed the layer style to multiply so the brick texture pops through.

To help me figure out the placement of the text, I used an image of the golden ratio and placed it onto the canvas with a low opacity.

Afterwards, I added a black inner and outer glow to the text to mimic the look of spray-paint.

Since the text and shoe both uses primary colors, the visual hierarchy is about the same. I wanted the shoe to be dominant so I decided to create radial rays through the use of a gradient and filters.

Using the golden ratio as a guide once more, I duplicated the rays and placed them at the heel and toe of the shoe to balance the composition.

I hid the layer with the golden ratio and completed my project of a graffiti-style shoe advertisement.
